Coaching Philosophy

What the staff brings to the dock every morning in Charleston.

Approach

Coaches emphasize consistent technical work, honest feedback, and a team-first identity. Sessions pair land training and ergometer pieces with on-water drills, building the aerobic base that carries athletes from local scrimmages into championship-level racing.

The staff also supports the academic life of rowers at the College of Charleston, encouraging a balance between coursework, training, and team events.

The coaching staff serves as the steady backbone of a collegiate rowing program shaped by tidal rivers, long training months, and the rhythms of a Southeast regatta calendar. Coaches at the College of Charleston Crew Team guide rowers through early morning erg sessions, technical drills on the water, and the steady build toward race day. Their work blends athlete development with the practical demands of managing boats, coordinating travel, and keeping a club program running smoothly across both Fall and Spring seasons.

Behind every sweep boat and sculling shell is a coaching philosophy built around fundamentals, consistency, and the discipline that competitive rowing demands. The staff supports novice rowers taking their first strokes and varsity athletes preparing for high-level competition against schools across the region, from Atlanta to the Carolina coast. Practices are structured around technique work, endurance training, and small-boat sessions that sharpen skills in singles, doubles, and pairs before crews combine into larger formations.

The leadership also plays a wider role in shaping team culture, helping student-athletes balance academics with the heavy time commitment of a club rowing schedule. Coaches coordinate regatta entries, manage equipment, and serve as mentors during the months when athletes juggle training, travel, and coursework. Their presence extends beyond practice, supporting the family atmosphere that defines the program and connecting the team to the broader Charleston rowing community along the Ashley River and beyond.
